Norm Macdonald’s Final Stand-Up Special Coming This Month

The late comedian self-taped an hour-long special from his home in the summer of 2020.

Norm Macdonald may have died last fall, but his comedy lives on. The comedian recorded a final hour of stand-up at his home in the summer of 2020, and now Norm Macdonald: Nothing Special is due to be released May 30 on Netflix.

The self-taped special is a product of Macdonald’s comic itch. Though he’d been sick with leukemia for many years, Macdonald was still a very active stand-up, writing jokes and touring theaters right up until the pandemic hit. When COVID shut down comedy clubs in the spring of 2020, Macdonald had just worked up a new hour of material that he wanted to get out into the world, so he decided to tape it at home by himself that summer. He did it all in one take, which just goes to show how sharp and savvy he was.

Lori Jo Hoekstra, Macdonald’s long-time producing partner, says that “while this version of Nothing Special was not originally meant to be the final product,” Macdonald’s family and friends wanted to make sure that the hour saw the light of day. “He left this gift for us all,” Hoekstra says.

Nothing Special will be released with a bonus featurette that contains a conversation between Adam Sandler, Conan O’Brien, Dave Chappelle, David Letterman, David Spade and Molly Shannon, all talking about their dear departed friend. The tribute to the comedian was taped earlier this month during a tribute to Macdonald at the Netflix Is a Joke festival.
